Communal Riots

"So tonight the members of apartment C-1,2,3 will be on guard until 9am" Mr. Doshi commanded then peeped through the rim of his glasses while looking at them, "Any Questions?"

The three gentlemen nodded their heads from left to right denying.

"The following members from apartment D-1,2,3 will be on guard from 9am until 3 pm" he announced while looking at those men, who nodded in assertiveness.

Communal riots had made communities all over the town unite to keep themselves safe from unstable minded people who had gone berserk over a political issue and were going about slaying people and insanely raiding homes.

Yes, It's here!

A story that revolves around the quest for happiness. We all look around for it at every nook and corner, but there are some who travel the seas to get themselves quenched with it. This story is about such a voyage whose intention was known, but it lead to the unknown.

Mantra for today: The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.                                            Marcel Proust

If I were a Crayon...

Honestly, when I think of crayons, it reminds me of coloring books. The same kinda books that I would sit hours together as a kid and towards the end when I would gleefully show off my work to the adults some would pat my back while some would pull my cheeks over it saying, "It's just adorable!" or "Good Job!"

Some aunts even took my coloring sheet with them after making me write my name on one corner of the paper, which I remember writing in BOLD letters with pride.

Well, this summer when I visited home, I got hold of one coloring paper from my mom's cupboard. At first, I thought it must be my son's art since the colors were haphazard and all over the dog and the house and the clouds and the sky. They were such dark colors that I mocked my kid saying, "Since when did clouds become blue in color?"

He sneered back at me and repeated the question.

I was confused.

He then pointed a particular name on the paper. I was shocked, embarrassed and blushed while trying to giggle it off.

Nah! my pre-teen did not give it off easily, though.

Then came the questions from him, "Why the house is red? Why is the dog black and why is the sky gray?" while I had to be introspective and come up with the right answers.

"The clouds are blue since I wanted rain. The house is red since it has strong people living in it. The dog is dirty thus black. The sky is gray since a thunderstorm is on the way."

Nature has defined colors around us. But, I think it is the eye of the observer on how he/she translates it.

No wonder there are coloring books for adults too! So that they can inner-direct their feelings via a crayon. Amazing how a man gets to reflect on his thoughts, feelings via this pastel and self-express himself.

If I were a crayon, I would prefer to be Orange in color.

Characteristics:
Orange is a power color. It is one of the healing colors. It is said to increase the craving for food. It also stimulates enthusiasm and creativity. Orange means vitality with endurance. People who like orange are usually thoughtful and sincere. Lady luck's color is orange.Curiosity is a driving characteristic of orange, and with it comes exploration of new things.

A crayon of any shade can bring color and a new dimension to the picture.

Mantra for today:  Our thoughts are alike the pastel thus can either make our life colorful or depressing.

When my neighbor's pet comes by to surprise me :)

The dainty and fragile structure of this fowl yet so much confidence to stay still even when shooed!

ALL ABOUT THE BOOK

NAME OF THE BOOK :
The Other End of the Corridor
AUTHOR : Sujata Rajpal

WHAT REVIEWERS SAY -

It was an engrossing novel, quite well written. I picked it up around evening and finished it at 8 p.m. (which speaks a volume of the interest part).

The story revolves around Leela, who is not so sure about what she wants from life, except for her dream of getting famous one day as an RJ. The fact that she is no where near to it makes the novel all the more interesting

Branded as unlucky due to her Mangli (Oh! God!) and the black colour (Why does colour matter so much?)

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

When your dreams are tainted with lies and deceit, you have no other choice but to walk to the other end of the corridor

Leela has nothing extraordinary about her except the dream to become famous. Her desires take wings when she gets married to a handsome boy from a respectable family in Delhi. But her dreams are shattered even before they have a chance to take flight.
She happens to meet two friends from a long forgotten past, which infuses hope and opens new avenues to realize her dormant aspirations.

Leela delves into previously unexplored paths of deception and forbidden passions that only make her stronger.

In an attempt to rediscover herself, she falls in love with life and with herself but her life takes a sudden turn again…
No matter what, Leela will continue to chase her dreams.

Where does this journey take her?

My Review

The Other End of the Corridor by Sujata Rajpal talks about the journey of a woman, Leela in a middle-class society who dared to dream amidst the 'mis-fortune' of being born as a female, having a dark complexion and having a horoscope that spells only doom (Manglik).

This woman went through all the unfair treatment with the hope to see the light at the other end of the tunnel. She endured the beating of her husband, her mother-in-law's (MIL) venomous words, parents alienation and brother's apathy. There was negativity all around her. In spite of her life being shallow and in murky waters, she allowed the lotus to bloom by daring to peep outside her four walls. During this journey, she met her old friends who not only helped her when in physical pain but also uplifted her spirits when she was emotionally and mentally at ground zero. After many years of physical, mental and emotional torture she was free from her husband's shadow, and a sudden turn around of character of her MIL made everything look rosy and hopeful. Even her parents chose to give her company in their retired lives. Gladly she made a career that she had dreamt off and lived happily ever after.

The author Sujata Rajpal has shed light on many elements that the society of India still crepitates thus making it cripple since it allows the weaker sex to undergo so much trauma. Sorrow is such a noun that it leaves all beings emotionally drained and the yearning to see happiness cause after all enough is enough !!  Sujata has done an excellent job in narrating the story of Leela Chopra via this book that left me to want the same for her. I rejoiced in her accomplishments at the end and was happy that she could finally see the other end of the corridor.

EXCERPT
"The corridor, I was walking down didn't have a trace of illumination. I couldn't see the other end. But I kept moving and now, I realize that more than the light, you need the determination to keep moving, keep struggling for your dreams, for your existence, for your survival."

I had lived in a dream world all my life, always blaming the circumstances for my own weaknesses. I could never gather courage to stand up to circumstances. For how long would I keep blaming others for my own shortcomings. And for how long would I keep dreaming- my dreams never aligned with the real world; my dreams and real life never converged at any point. ‘I definitely had experience but only in building castles in the air.’

Wordless Wednesday #114

This is a name of a Restaurant that I visited in December. It was not just an eating place, but had many factors that made my visit divine!
Thus, making this name very dear to me!

As we are still in the first month of this year, I would like us all to be aware, mindful, attentive and alive as the mind churns thoughts.  Since these thoughts make us perform actions.

Let us all travel under the shade of the Bodhi tree that will enlighten our path as we continue to tread upon it in 2016.

Mantra for today: “Do not look for happiness outside yourself. The awakened seek happiness inside.”

The Granny

"No one loves me!" Liz screamed as she banged her door while shutting herself in.
Sobs could be heard loud and clear.

After a few minutes, the door opened, and she was apologizing to her Granny, who was knitting while swaying herself to calmness in a rocking chair.

"I love you" replied the Granny while hugging her tight and explaining her rebel behavior in school that got her into trouble.

Liz tried to clarify, and the Granny gave her space by keeping mum. Towards the end of the analysis, Liz realized her lunatic conduct and blushed out of embarrassment.
