Jyoti's first novel, Dream's Sake, was published in 2011 by V&S Publishers. It received great reviews and much appreciation from readers.Books have always been Jyoti’s best friends. In fact, books so fascinated her from early childhood that she learnt reading, by herself, even before she started going to school. And she considers herself most fortunate that she is able to pursue her dream of being a novelist and work at what she loves best.
However, if books are Jyoti’s first love, and she’s still very devoted to them, the thrilling and steadily advancing world of technology also fascinates her. As a result, one of Jyoti’s blog is a technological blog called Techn0Treats. In 2011, a post in this blog won her the title of Samsung Mobile when Samsung made her a part of the team of the twenty bloggers chosen from all over India through a blogging competition. In this team of twenty bloggers, she was the only woman and perhaps the only one who had studied literature instead of science. As a Samsung Mobiler, Jyoti acted as the promoter and ambassador of Samsung.
Jyoti is a patient of Thalassemia Major which forced her to stop going to school after class seventh. After that, she continued her studies on her own through correspondence courses. Her zest to overcome her medical problems and made her an inspiration for many.

Review and Spotlight of Lucifer's Lungi by Nitin Sawant

"Lucifer's Lungi"

Lucifer's Lungi
by
Nitin Sawant

The Blurb
An atheist city-slicker unleashed on a medieval holy village...

A simpleton village priest's boy who blindly worships and guards a pantheon of Gods and Their traditions...

Strange things happen when their worlds collide!

This is a tale of that turmoil on a lonely night in a jungle, when the ghosts you never knew till a few hours ago are let loose on the ghosts that you always carried within, unknowingly.

Welcome to the unholy clash of beliefs, fears and frailties with unknown Gods and demons. A clash that will test your convictions. A clash that will rabidly claw and unmask your subconscious, leaving you naked and paralyzed in front of your demons - in a climax that is as ambiguous as it is certain...

My Review

The name of the book, Lucifer's Lungi drew my attention since it symbolizes humor, and I assumed it to be a light read.

No regrets since it gave me some space and time to ponder over some issues (when the plot became a little redundant) that we had taken some myths for granted in our lives. Thus, making me help evaluate from the perspective of the protagonist and the priest's boy.

Lucifer's Lungi is a story about a man who is a software professional working in the city and tries to escape the boring and monotonous life by making weekend trips to new places. On one such trip, he ends up in a small village where the holiday becomes an adventure. Here he is exposed to the religious myths and being a man from the city that embraces science and facts, the story revolves on how he deals with the situation.

This is the author's debutant novel, and he has done a fine job in keeping his readers glued while touching a topic in a non-judgemental way!

The narration is crisp and kept me on the edge. Although what I really admired about the author was that he presented a serious matter that has been nagging our society for years; to deliver in such a prudent yet light manner that is not offensive to people favoring either sides.

Thus, making it a book as a must-read who would aye or nay on the religious beliefs presented.

Alex's Pets - A Children's story

On a lazy summer afternoon, a boat is sailing over a calm river with some pure laughter in the background.
Alex is going sailing with his parents, and he is all giggles over how the ants in his boat are picking the crumbles of the sandwich left behind after their meal.

"Look Alex, we are going under a bridge." interrupted Dad

"Wowie!" he looked up and clapped in delight.

Just then the boat shook violently, and while Mom held onto Alex, Dad tried to stabilize it.

Soon everything was calm.

Just then a small bark caught the attention of this family. Alex was quick to wander around in search of this noise, and found a weak four legged creature under the wooden seat. Alex squealed in delight and pulled him out gently, with the mom by his side.

"How did he come here?" asked the dad as he was busy sailing the water vehicle.

"Oh! maybe he dropped off from the bridge, Dad" came a quick response.

Mom and Dad eye each other and chime in, "Maybe, you are right."

"Can we keep him?"urged Alex

"Oh! I dunno Alex," frowned mom, "your other pet won't be too happy with it."

"Who? Dino?"

Mom nodded affirmatively.

"Nah! Dino will be fine, Mom. A four legged animal meets another four legged creature. What's not to like about it?"Alex assured.

"We'll see about it, when we get home, Alex."

Soon they reached home, and Dino was surprised to see a furry animal in his master's hand.

He was quick to grunt.

Alex ignored him, and started playing with his new found pet whom he named Mario.

Next day Alex goes to school with his two pets to bond.

Mario is sitting in one corner waiting nervously for his master to arrive while Dino is staring at him and would snort at his each move, thus making Mario even more scared.

That would give Dino an empowering feeling, and he would feel proud of himself.

Just then lightning strikes, and a piece of thick wood falls over the feeble puppy.

He is sobbing in pain.

Mom tries to rescue him, but to no luck!

Dino overcomes his jealousy and lends his strong paws to lift the wood, to which the pup is quick to get up and run outside.

Once Mom, Dino and Mario are outdoors. Mario is quick to lick Dino to show his appreciation, and then runs into the arms of Mom.

Dino and Mario are friends, and Alex is lucky to have two cool pets.

The Defeat

Pedro is moving his feet briskly in the ground trying to level off the mud.

His mind is moving aimlessly that he did not notice his coach come near him and direct him to start the game.

Looks up towards the voice, frowns for a microsecond, then brings his attention to the surroundings by a quick nod, and a silent, "I can do it."

He propels his first ball after a deep inhalation, which helped pacify his mind that was drifting flash forward to a scenario where he gave away runs that led to the defeat of his team.

Can you choose your neighbors?

Over a decade ago, we had arrived in this neighborhood.

Extra chirpy and jovial, you could blame it on our age or just the fact that we wanted to be friendly.
Our neighbors were also equally eager to wear a smile now and then.

Such was life!

While settling in, we would occasionally see a pair of eyes poking our backs, we would turn around to see nobody.

Strange!

But, that feeling would last only for a fraction of second, and we would continue to mingle, meld, interweave in the customs of our neighbors coming from ethnic backgrounds, just as they were embracing us from our background.

We were so new to the house and its settings, that I remember we were instructed by our realtor on how to operate things such as opening/closing the garage, operating the sprinklers, landscape lights, and many other internal things. Thus, leaving us exhausted!

Few months went down, and we noticed a tree in our front yard, blocking sunlight. Since we were still pre-occupied handling the operations within the home, we hired a professional tree trimer to do the job.

He came in on the scheduled time and day, and started the work.

We were standing outside whilst waving a hellos to our neighbors.

Just then a car came to a screeching halt on our drive-way, and that made us short of breath. This kind of car on our property, is a total no-no, and it gave us even more curiosity when the person dressed as a cop stepped out of the car.

We were startled, when he asked us if we were the owners of this house?

To which, we immediately nodded our heads.

He took out his small notepad, and started jotting down our names, which was quite an effort to announce from our end.

"Do you have a permit to trim this tree?" he came to the point

"Permit? Why" was my better half's response

"We own the property, then why the permit?" he clarified while still curious.

"Well, any tree on the sidewalk is the city's property, and you need a permit for that." he said while jotting down something on his scratch pad.

Just then we saw an elderly man walking towards our house. We had never seen him before, but those eyes, had a striking resemblance. I kept staring at them.

He agreed with what the cop had to say about the permit, and went about taking his side. We were taken aback by his attitude and felt quite unhappy.

Days rolled by, and we learnt that it was that neighbor who had called the cop!

Made me realize that when it comes to my neighbors, not all can be friendly even though you flash out your pearly whites that have been just bleached by those whitening strips.

It makes no impact on them!

Today, each morning as we continue to live in this neighborhood, we are enjoying the many smiles and waves and also those pair of eyes that keep a keen eye on our movements.

Mantra for today: You cannot choose your neighbors, so why fret!
