Book Review: The Magician: The Tarot Trilogy Book #1

Blurb

Fashion designer Sasha Kapoor always felt she’d missed out on love as she had an arranged marriage. And when her husband turns up at their 15th-anniversary party with a strange woman, she knows that her marriage is dying. With constant surprises and disasters to contend with, will Sasha ever get a chance at true love?

Shantha is much sought after for her tarot card readings on love, but can’t seem to help her own love life with a string of broken relationships behind her. Now, sparks are flying between her and a sexy bartender but will this relationship fizzle out too?

Young professionals Nilima and her husband are so besotted with each other, they give the word ‘soulmate’ a complex. Theirs is a match made in heaven…till tragedy strikes.

The Magician is a heart-warming story of these three dynamic women as they discover the meaning of true love through loss and longing.

Review

The Magician – The Tarot Trilogy Book 1, is a debut novel by Sonia Rao. It's a story of three career-

oriented women: Sasha: an owner of a high-end boutique catering to the needs of reputed clients but

in need of love and compassion from her better-half. Nilima: a young woman in a loving and devoted

relationship but looking forward to starting a family. Shantha: professional tarot reader who is also

looking for a loving relationship. The three of them are ambitious but want to find love and stability

in their relationships.

Will they find it?

This novel will take you on their journey as the author narrates their love, lust, flings, and longing

along with their losses, sorrows, heartbreaks as they go through life's challenges. The tarot reader's

prediction and it's meaning would keep me engrossed on how the plot would evolve, and the author

did justice to the twists that she brought along, especially in Sasha's life.

The title is apt, and the cover is intriguing as it brings out the many emotions of a woman. If you are

looking for a quick, light-hearted contemporary read, do pick this up.

A student of history in Switzerland goes missing.
A man drinks exactly seven cups of coffee everyday in the same restaurant and believes in Mind Transportation. Two newly married Swiss detective agents arrive and begin a shocking tale of love, friendship, betrayal and death. From the colorful coasts of Goa, India to the enchanting backdrop of Zurich,Switzerland, the mystery of Verona Schmidt baffles everyone. With shocking twits and turns in every chapter, The Seventh Cup might just have the addictive flavor to stir the readers mind...may be forever !!!

My Review

The Seventh Cup is a story revolving around a student of history, Verona who goes missing and how an agent gets around to solving this mystery by traveling countries and interviewing people and getting logistics straight amidst juggling romance with her newly married husband.

This is a story about Avinash and Verona, two characters from different background, and the story goes on to become how they get involved with each other via many terminologies that the author introduced such as 'Mind Transportation' 'Law of Attraction, The Phenomenon of Universal Rearrangement'

No doubt the phrasing was delectable and putting a distinct flavor in the mouth of the reader, but alas it did not last for long since the theory did not actually hold true towards the end thus, created confusion in the reader's mind. However, I would love to have a storyline developed on the above locutions and see where it goes :)

The Seventh Cup story is about friendship, goof-ups, confession, jealousy, hatred, murder, which eventually led to self-immolation.

Slow in the first half thus forcing the reader to read. The story is a mixed of tenses again leading to more confusion. Some scenes and dialogs between Verona and Avinash seemed to be a drag too. Also, some scenes of interaction between the detectives could have been omitted.

Amidst all the above pros and cons, the author left the reader spellbound with the climax, which was mind-blowing! Thus, making me raise my thumb up for a suggested read, and an inclination to read, "The Secret" which I had been delaying for a while.

My Review

Mr. Imperfect Series is a story of three women Nikki, Sonali, and Maya, who are independent, self-sufficient and unconstrained by the traditions of the society. Each has a mind of their own and are not scared to speak of it when given the microphone. These women while paving their respective paths meet special men in their lives that deliver promises and are fearless to keep what their utter thus, helping them earn extra brownie points that helped turn their relationship into a  union that made the boys become their admirable better halves.

Life is about compromises, give and take and adjustments. These three couples were determined to bear it all in spite of their promising career. They were ready to take chances even though their respective profession did not allow it. For instance Nikki, a realtor made a choice of dating Karan her client which turned into a promising future for both of them. Ishan took a chance of meeting Sonali after his recent breakup and that too turned into a success. Maya's meet up with Tahir turned into a blossoming liaison.

The author gave a perfect balance to these three couples by dedicating a whole story behind them. Although, it would have been even more interesting to see some twists and turn into their respective plots to keep the reader intrigued for more!

The author, Aditi Chopra has delivered a strong message via these three couples. Mr. Imperfect Series is a book trying to tell a saga of humans of all shapes and sizes who are successful yet imperfect in many ways. They don't fear to jump into the pit of taking a chance and gamble their life to a happily ever after. Thus, making it a recommended breeze read on a dull, mundane Sunday evening.

Review and Spotlight of And We Remained by Asad Ali Junaid

And We Remained
by
Asad Ali Junaid

The Blurb

It is Bangalore in the late 1990’s. There are tremendous socio-economic and cultural transformations taking place as a result of liberalization. How would these changes impact a group of friends in their late teens? How would they cope, find opportunities and what of their original identities would they be left with, after western ideologies are brought in and bombarded into their awareness by cable TV and new media?

Told through emails and first person account of events, And We Remained is a light and entertaining read of these friends as they experience love, heartbreak, prison, politics, drunken binges, strip clubs, sexcapades, US and Europe during their journey into adulthood

My Review

And We Remained, by Asad Ali Junaid is a story that is guaranteed to give you goosebumps as it takes you down memory lane of college life in India. Those precious days when most of the youth have big dreams to become either an engineer, a business tycoon or a doctor and want to touch the sky; just like that song in QSQT, "Papa kehte hein" Although being smitten by love is another path that most pave upon along with their academics. This book said it all!

This is mainly a tale of five college mates namely Sahir, Sandip, Gopal, Anand, and David. These five batch mates go through thick and thin during their academic years thus making them stick together even once they graduate. Their college lives are narrated by these individuals giving them a complete chapter to themselves.  The author would take us back n forth from their present to the future where they would be interacting with each other via texts, messages, and emails thus, giving the reader a glimpse of what kind of life these characters could carve out for themselves.

Although it was good to reminisce about the past as college students and that life, but as a reader I kept waiting for a story to erupt. Wanted some climax to make me sit up and take notice on the characters mentioned above. Although the part where the boys were put in the jail for ragging was astonishing, and the atrocities they went through was chilling and horrifying. But, was surprised that even though they were falsely accused, they were accepted back into the college and eventually embraced by all their co-students. The author could have put some twist along with the ongoing good, bad, funny experiences and their aimless lives to keep the readers interested in a "What next" saga. The story was more about crushes with Wardha and the interactions the three young boys, Sahir, Sandeep and Gopal had with respect to her.

And We Remained is a bunch of good, and funny experiences during college times and how these five young men could carve a niche in spite of the above. It definitely is a recommended read since it takes us all to those lovely carefree yet anxious days when we were younger and enjoyed life yet feared of what our future would be?
