Guest Post of The Smitten Husband by Sundari Venkatraman

Lately it's been raining authors :)

I got an opportunity to meet up with The Sundari Venkatraman.

Question
"I see you have penned down quite an impressive number of books thus, making your writing career as Numero Uno. As a reader and a follower of your author page, could I get a peek into A Day in the Life of Author Sundari Venkatraman?"

Thank you so much for your compliment. Numero Uno!!! Not yet, but soon. :D

All my days are generally the same from Monday to Sunday Unless, I decide to go out by myself or with my family, I work on all seven days of the week. It’s fun since I am my own boss.

I am a late riser, waking up at around 9-9.30 am. I cook on some days when the mood takes, or my part-time cook does the honours. I open my computer at around 11 am. I begin with promotions, a bit of fooling around on social media and then writing.

I do my best to write every day and succeed most days. My target is 2000 words, but it doesn’t really matter as long as I write at least 500 words. What I write today, I definitely edit and proof the very next day. I can’t go forward otherwise.

I read at least a few pages every day. I go for a walk or exercise, depending on my mood. Sometimes, I am too lazy to do either. Dinner is my department and I can’t escape that. So I cook in the late evening.

Late into the night, when all are asleep, I pray. This is basically chatting with my Maker, writing my gratitude journal and visualising my future in colour.

I go to sleep at 2-3 am.

Yeah, my family has given up on me. They realise that it’s more peaceful if I am left to live my life the way I want. ;)

AN AUTOGRAPH FOR ANJALI – BOOK REVIEW

Anjali, the character blossomed gradually to the reader as the novel progressed. Her struggle in her marriage and within made me ponder on many issues that the women in society are till date juggling. The freedom to explore when the husband is at work, yet the inability to do so since she has been chained down by many restrictions by her better half made me suffocate thus, the feeling of empathy and compassion grew for this character. Also, the author kept the reader's attention by keeping the chapters small and precise. That was a blessing especially since suffering was in plenty and for a woman to see another woman go through it was torture!

Just as the darkness ends when a streak of light is visible, comes the character Parth. He picks up Anjali from the rambles since she was wandering around aimlessly trying to get love, attention from seekers passing by. Fortunately, his affection was genuine, and I wish the author had shown more of his emotional side rather than the physical attraction since that would have made a lasting relationship in the eyes of a reader.
Anjali's depression seemed faux at times since it did not give me as a reader enough material to believe in it.
Another loophole was the easy breezy solve of the murder mystery. I wish the author had given some twists and turns and kept the reader guessing!

Overall a light, easy breezy read, and what delighted me that Anjali had a happy ending, which made me believe once again that the Universe abides with the kind hearted people!

Review of The Madras Affair by Sundari Venkataraman

  • Paperback: 288 pages
  • Publisher: Readomania; 1st edition (2015)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 819299757X
  • ISBN-13: 978-8192997575

My Review

The Madras Affair by Sundari Venkatraman is a romance genre but also highlights a pivotal issue that still grips the society in India. She has tried to raise awareness via this book that ends in a happy ending for Sangita, the woman who had faced it all at the tender age of 19.

Sangita is a widow with a five-year-old son, and her conservative parents are completely to be blamed for the state she is in, however; she continues to trudge along her journey by working as a receptionist at a hospital. There she meets her future, Gautam the source of joy and bliss that she had always imagined. The Madras Affair is the journey on how she dealt with her parents, the antagonists and found her happily ever after.

In this book, there were some goosebump moments that made me believe that humanity is not lost. The bond between the sister-in-law and Sangita. The relationship between Gautam and his parents and grandparents. The way Gautam's side embraced Sangita despite her dark past. Gautam was fighting for his love till the end.

All such moments made me want to finish reading it in one go....Maybe, since in my heart of heart I wanted justice for Sangita. Thus, crediting the author for how she sketched the characters in this novel while keeping the language simple and fluent that made the reader actually grow fond of them as the story progressed.

Tornado Giveaway 2: Book No. 3: MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN by Sundari Venkatraman

Name of the Book: MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN
Author: Sundari Venkatraman

Read some reviews:

1. Rubina Ramesh
2. Swathi Shenoy
3. Usha Narayanan

The Story:

A collection of 13 romantic short stories based in India; a culture rich country steeped in tradition. Inspiration struck me from newspaper articles, TV shows and hearing people talk. The short stories are based on that fact that arranged marriages thrive right alongside love matches in India.

1. Groomnapped is Ameya-Surekha’s story as a light romantic take on the serious issue of groom kidnappings.
2. Dark skin on a woman puts off men in general or so says the society. Beauty Is But Skin Deep is Nitin-Simran’s story that proves it wrong!
3. Ritu is twenty-five and wants to wait for her Prince Charming but her parents are desperate to arrange her wedding. Does she find her prince in An Arranged Match?
4. Dating Agencies are doing their best to get young people together to tie the knot. My friend Diti runs an informal one; inspiring the Red Rose Dating Agency.
5. A guy’s complaint about his fiancée of a few years dumping him after becoming successful in her film career felt like a rant to me. Chahti Hoon Tumhe is an ode to the successful actress.
6. Soumya actually lives life like Soul Mates but how many have the guts to? This, incidentally, is the first short story that I ever wrote.
7. Does Madeinheaven.com help bring Menka & Jeetu together with technology driven Matchmaking website?
8. I originally wrote Rahat Mili for an anthology; Rahat means ‘relief’ and is a name too. Read the story with the word in mind and it will fall in place.
9. Reema’s Matchmakers brings Arjun and Prisha together at a get-together through a matchmaking network. But will they get married?
10. Nikita wants Krish for a friend and not her husband. As The Reluctant Bride she manages to have her cake and eat it too.
11. Shweta Ka Swayamvar is inspired by the practice of Swayamwar in ancient India of choosing a husband, from among a list of suitors, by a girl of marriageable age.
12. Pappa’s Girl is about daughters of Industrialists taking over fathers’ businesses.
13. Mythology romances intrigue me; Love Match For Velan is my take on Lord Murugan falling in love with his consort Valli.

About The Author

Sundari Venkatraman

Even as a kid, Sundari absolutely loved the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome as she grew up reading all the fairy tales she could lay her hands on, Phantom comics, Mandrake comics and the like. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end.

Soon, into her teens, Sundari switched her attention from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to a local hero and heroine. Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years.

Then came the writing – a true bolt out of the blue! She could never string two sentences together. While her spoken English had always been excellent – thanks to her Grandpa – she couldn’t write to save her life.

All this changed suddenly one fine day in the year 2000. She had just quit her job as a school admin and didn’t know what to do with her life. She was saturated with simply reading books. That’s when she returned home one evening after her walk, took some sheets of paper and began writing. It was like watching a movie that was running in her head – all those years of visualising Indian heroes and heroines needed an outlet and had to be put into words. That’s how her first novel, The Malhotra Bride, took shape. While she felt discouraged when publishing didn’t happen, it was her husband who kept encouraging her not to give up.

In the meanwhile, she landed a job as Copy Editor with Mumbai Mirror. After working there for two years, she moved to the Network 18 Group and worked with two of their websites over the next six years, as Content Editor.

Despite her work schedule, she continued to write novels and then short stories and had them published in her blogs. She also blogs voraciously, writing on many different topics – travel, book reviews, film reviews, restaurant reviews, spirituality, alternative health and more.

Her first eBook Double Jeopardy – a romance novella – was published by Indireads and has been very well received by readers of romance.

In 2014, Sundari self-published The Malhotra Bride (2nd Edition); Meghna; The Runaway Bridegroom; Flaming Sun Collection 1: Happily Ever Afters From India (Box Set) and Matches Made In Heaven (a collection of romantic short stories).

2015 brought yet another opportunity. Readomania came forward to traditionally publish this book – The Madras Affair – a mature romance set in Madras.

My Review

Matches Made in Heaven is a collection of short romantic stories by Sundari Venkataraman. Each of them is unique trying to cover the different ethnics of the continent, yet surprisingly all were speaking the same language of compassion, lust, fondness and friendship when it came to expressing love.

The story that caught my attention was, "Soul Mates" It is the story of today, a tale that every household will be experiencing eventually since we are going global in all aspects. The statement that made me agree in unison with the character, Soumya, "You allow Chinese noodles and Italian pizzas into your kitchen. You grow and adapt your palate to different cuisines. You dress differently and use imported lipsticks and perfumes. You listen to rock music, and you dance western style. These are but physical expressions of globalization. The true spirit of globalization is Universal love."

Loved it!

Although each story had its unique touch, I would have appreciated if the font, spacing in the e-book would have been large and spaced out for better reading.

Love is not just a noun, but when used can become an armor and help man of any color unite. It is a dialect spoken by all living creatures, and it, when embraced, can only give a happily ever after! Thus recommending all to read it.

MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN

Romantic Short Stories by

Sundari Venkatraman

Sneak Peak

Swayamwar on TV reality show; Dating Clubs; Matchmaking websites; parents setting up their children with one another; friends getting married and more – there are many ways that couples get together for hopefully a “Happily Ever After” experience. MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN explores the various premises in the form of short stories that one can relate to in everyday life. There is even one based on Gods falling in love. Shh! I am not going to say anything further. It’s for you to find out.

And there are thirteen of them. While many insist that “13” is an unlucky number, I am quite fascinated by it. I absolutely believe that it’s a lucky number for me. That’s why I decided to publish this anthology with 13 romantic stories.
