Review of The Reengineers by Indu Muralidharan

The Reengineers

Blurb

Chinmay Narayan is plotting to kill himself. He is a misfit at school, his parents are about to divorce and the love of his life doesn’t know he exists. It seems pointless to go on with such a dysfunctional life. But before he gets anywhere with that plan, Chinmay and his friends, Anu and Sabi, stumble into the eerie world of Conchpore through a portal in Uncle RK’s library. They find themselves in The Seeker’s School, where you can buy spiritual courses that will bring you enlightenment. While the seekers seem unaware that there is anything amiss, Chinmay and his friends stumble upon a strange and sinister plot that the teachers and students are caught up in. The three youngsters suddenly find themselves in danger, and their only hope is the charismatic Siddharth, an old student of the school who has come to visit. Chinmay discovers that Siddharth is seeking catharsis from his dark past by writing a book—a book with Chinmay as the protagonist. He realizes that his own story is a mirror image of Siddharth’s, which leads to a moment of reckoning for him: can he become the author of his own life?
Set in Madras in the early nineties, The Reengineers dispels the boundaries between fiction and reality to tell a tale that is as much a coming-of-age story as it is an inspiring narrative of self-empowerment and spiritual growth.

Review

The Reengineers is a book that has covered many issues such as Depression yet being mindful towards and aiming for holistic health of body and mind while seeking the truth of one's soul.

The story is set in Madras and begins with a teenage boy, Chinmay preparing for his tenth-grade exams along with his besties Anu and Sabi in the library of his aunt. When suddenly a journey unfolds when a particular door opens, and they land in a Seeker's School in Conchpure. The setting seems real with how the author shows a group of people chanting away while the confused students try to make sense of their surroundings. The adventure develops from here onwards...

Govind, the antagonist, is developed well, and he sure did make an impression on the reader's mind. Siddharth's Letters to a Hero were mind blowing, but I was surprised to see a transformation happen in Chinmay so soon especially since he had been battling with depression and had plans of suicide after his board exams given the current family problems between his mom and dad. The narration of the downfall of the Seeker's School was slow, but it ended well with the professor concluding to take to the mountains while dissolving his staff. No doubt characters such as Govind and Roshan did not take it well, and repercussions were shown that was satisfying as a reader. Eventually, the children returned 'home', but with a wider outlook and yet the satisfaction to be near their closed ones. They finished their exams and enjoyed their summer with Charu Bhabhi, the newest member of their family. Also liked the matured and happy go lucky attitude of Chinmay towards his parents and their present situation between their relationship.

Biggest turnaround in the story: Chinmay shining from this new journey and ready to 'write his future' as suggested by Siddharth. His perception towards life had changed, as he said adios to his days of despair.

The language was flawless with a couple of twists. But the pace was slow thus, making the reader in me hold the reins towards some action. I liked the notion of how depression is woven into unearthliness and eventually Chinmay is pulled out of it. However, there are some buts and ifs that I could not digest. Dialogue such as, "Be Happy!" "Brother" Sister" sounded a little cheeky as a reader.

Need I add that the above twist reminded me of the Magic Tree House Series where the children would enter a new place and get into adventure and then return home with a new perspective and dimension in their lives thus, giving the young readers a take home lesson.

The Reengineers not only rewired the minds of these young teenagers but also helped them take charge of their future by enabling them to write one for themselves, thus leaving on a positive note for the reader!

Book Review of Color Me Rich

Title: Color Me Rich

Author: Mohan Deep

ISBN:9788192678528

Number of Pages: 189

Publisher: Quest Mercury Intermedia Private Limited

Genre: Fiction/Thriller

Review
Color Me Rich is a thriller that will keep you on the edge while flipping pages after pages until it ends with a slam leaving you astonished, and heart broken!
The Story starts with an introduction to Akash's life and his struggles as a painter in Mumbai. He has a roommate named Pran, who is also struggling as an actor. While their attempts to make a livelihood, Akash comes across the socialite Zenobia, who eventually becomes his better half. A life of luxury and success unfolds for both the men as Akash takes his friend and roommate along.
However, Akash could not forget his first and old flame from his struggling days. Suma. This leads to insecurity and frustration for his bride thus, leading to quarrels and arguments since jealousy became inevitable.
Amidst this uncertainty, Zenobia is dead. That grabs the reader's attention and the longing to find the criminal, which leads to reading till the end.
The author, Mohan Deep has kept his novella crisp, to the point with just the right characters that could add spice to the story line. Classic Example is the Bollywood Aunty! The Characters are well etched except for Suma, who could have had some more depth to her character especially since she was a vital role in the love triangle story. Some words of Marathi/Hindi had to be interpreted and did make the reader in me pause for a bit. But, the flow of the storyline which went about from the past to the present caught in me immediately, and I could finish the story in a sitting. The author could portray the guilt in Akash's character via his empty canvas.
Color Me Rich is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge while allowing you a few moments here and there to ponder on the society as the author could unveil the hypocrisy of the rich and the silent sobs of the struggling.

My Review

Done with Men (DWM) is a romantic novel and the setting where the majority of the plot revolves around is a hospital, but the vibes of injury, blood, or surgery are not felt thus, making a reader stay in a comfort zone while the character, Kairavi is healing from her fall and romancing the doctor who is mending her.

The protagonist, Kairavi tells her own story and is a confident young lady who has not been very fortunate in finding love. Her carefree attitude kept me fixated as I enjoyed a few giggles over a few episodes one such where she fell off the balcony and had to be hospitalized.

Honestly, the story line is regular but the author has balanced it with a few guffaws that made my cheek muscles stretch involuntarily.

But, then there was a slight glitch that I could not digest well. The climax could have been a little more crisp. Kairavi being a well educated, up to date and contemporary woman falls into a misunderstanding when the man she loves goes out to buy a ring with a girl who is supposed to be his fiance. I paused for a bit and wanted Kairavi to go and approach Vivian (cause according to the character evolved by the author, she could have done it) and ask point blank about their relationship rather than getting upset about it, and trying to avoid him.

The author, Shuchi's way of writing is jaunty, and that made the whole book appealing and engaging till the end. Thus, giving it a 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to any patron who loves reading about flings since it is a fanciful story.

My Review

Mr. Imperfect Series is a story of three women Nikki, Sonali, and Maya, who are independent, self-sufficient and unconstrained by the traditions of the society. Each has a mind of their own and are not scared to speak of it when given the microphone. These women while paving their respective paths meet special men in their lives that deliver promises and are fearless to keep what their utter thus, helping them earn extra brownie points that helped turn their relationship into a  union that made the boys become their admirable better halves.

Life is about compromises, give and take and adjustments. These three couples were determined to bear it all in spite of their promising career. They were ready to take chances even though their respective profession did not allow it. For instance Nikki, a realtor made a choice of dating Karan her client which turned into a promising future for both of them. Ishan took a chance of meeting Sonali after his recent breakup and that too turned into a success. Maya's meet up with Tahir turned into a blossoming liaison.

The author gave a perfect balance to these three couples by dedicating a whole story behind them. Although, it would have been even more interesting to see some twists and turn into their respective plots to keep the reader intrigued for more!

The author, Aditi Chopra has delivered a strong message via these three couples. Mr. Imperfect Series is a book trying to tell a saga of humans of all shapes and sizes who are successful yet imperfect in many ways. They don't fear to jump into the pit of taking a chance and gamble their life to a happily ever after. Thus, making it a recommended breeze read on a dull, mundane Sunday evening.

Review of Saved in Srilanka by Devika Fernando

Some people are destined to meet.

It sure feels that way when Sri Lankan tour guide Sepalika meets Daniel. The mysterious tourist from Ireland steals his way into her heart and makes her question everything her life is built upon. Instant attraction turns to love – but does he feel the same? And what about the secret she’s hiding from him?

Follow the two on their quest for a happy ending amid the beauty and wonders of the tropical island paradise of Sri Lanka.

My Review

Saved in SriLanka is a tale of two characters Sepalika and Daniel, who were rescued from their pitfalls, and finally united with each other for a happily ever after.

This drama unfolds from the city Colombo where the tourists meet their guide, and continue through the many exotic sites of Srilanka such as the Pinnawala Village, the Kandy City, the ancient palace Sigiriya, a city of light: Nuwara Eliya, the Yala Forest, Galle city, a coastal town Ambalangoda, Bentota, and Anuradhapura.

Sepalika is a tour guide working for a tourist company that begins their tours from Colombo; has high aspirations, and has been able to fulfill most of them. Coming from a middle class family, she could find ways and means to go abroad for education, and just when she had started earning, she was called back to her hometown Colombo to help her mom nurse her ailing dad. That spoke volumes about her personality. Being grounded in spite of having an international degree, and being there for her parents when in need.

This young lady bartered herself just to be able to give the best medical treatment to her dad, which eventually landed her in a soup of emotions when she met a guy of her preference, modality, and liking.

Daniel, an Irish tourist, fell for his guide's looks, knowledge, and intelligence. Romance sparkled between the two like-minded people, but there were instances when Sepalika would hesitate to take it further. More so the promise of being faithful to her fiancee who was more of an on-paper deal! Daniel was devastated and heartbroken and preferred to stay clear of her after that.
That's when she weighed her preferences, priorities and peeped in her pocket to try to find a solution.
The thought of working round the clock to pay up was the only solution, but she stuck to her guns. Gradually gathered the guts to confront her fiancee, Mahesh, who was using her as an arm candy cause of her beauty and intelligence.

This story is about Daniel, who got his love back after having the strength to confront her and Sepalika, who had the guts to face the ugly and fathom what lay ahead, and still dared to dream. It is a story of survival of these two lovers who fell, but after giving a good fight, they got saved in Srilanka amidst the beautiful, picturesque landscape.

The Author Devika did an excellent job of putting two pieces together. Touring a country can always induce romance, and she managed to bring out strong elements of the two characters that were compatible and wanted a life together. Her exquisite and expository language could give a feel to the reader of what the landscape was about, and not only fall in love with the characters; Daniel and Sepalika but also get a feel of the particular city they were touring while lending an ear to its history.  However, sometimes, I felt the tourism was taking over the story thus making it sway from it's plot.

I would recommend this book to any reader fond of romance and has a craze for traveling.

The author gave me this book in exchange for an honest review!

Review and Spotlight of Lemon Girl by Jyoti Arora

Picture

BLURB

Picture
'It's all your fault.'
Mere words these are.
"But words can possess a shadow invincible enough to rob even a soul of its eternity."
In a society that finds it easier to mark sins of a victim than the culprit, Nirvi is a young girl punishing herself for the faults she did not do and avenging her hurts by defeating her own truth.
She is scared of her future, and ashamed of her past. She is failing herself, and knows it. She has had a long line of boyfriends, and hated them all. She detests the guy she is living with, runs away from the one she loves , and seduces the one who can never love her.
When Arsh first sees Nirvi, she's a free and frank girl in whose eyes sparkle the lemony zest of life. The next time he sees her, she is a voiceless doll draped in clothes that cover her body less and shroud her soul more. And Arsh can't rest till he finds out what made Nirvi give up her own real self.
Nirvi knows she is dragging herself on a path from which there can be no recovery. Can her spirit survive the treacherous downfall? Or is the pull of fear and push of desperation just too strong to withstand for a girl who believes she has "nowhere else to go" but down.
"When it's time for you to fall in love, even a lemon can become the cause of it," says Arsh.
But can love survive, when even the self love dies?
Can love survive when respect is no more?
Does true love have the power to revive a dying soul?
Find out in the pages of this brilliantly woven, intense, heart-warming and thought-provoking saga of RISING IN LOVE.

My Review
This book has a unique kick that makes you want to know more about this once described carefree girl whose jaunty and happy go lucky attitude was captured by an onlooker on a casual day thus making him nickname her as a "Lemon Girl"
That spunky, feisty attitude  described by Arsh created such an image that the reader kept flipping the pages to know more about Nirvi, who was given the above nickname. But alas when he meets her after a few years, he finds her reclusive, cloistered and unsocial. However, that does not keep him away from her. He continues to hang around her friends and Nirvi to know more about her, and gradually many closets were opened and skeletons were brought out. This helped Nirvi contemplate her fears as she mulled over her past and tried pushing them away, but with caution. Fortunately Arsh was there at each step of the way, thus allowing him to get a place in her heart, as he gained her trust thus becoming her ally.
The narration is smooth except for some instances where I thought the communication between Arsh and Nirvi could have been portrayed in a more fledged and mature way given that they are two adults!
Lemon Girl not only tells a tale of a girl named Nirvi, but also talks about a scar that has made the progress of women weaker, and man refuses to peep into it despite the darkness and intensity of this problem caused by thy man! This book delivered not only a literary composition, but also dealt with an important issue that makes me admire the author for the duality thus, making it a recommended read!
