Holiday Wish Drive

Every year we get a few random wishlists of children and try to fulfill their wish list with regards to toys.

I was amazed by the list this year....Easy Bake oven ($44.99)/ Furby collection ($50)/ Lego Starwars (starting at $40)

Earlier, I used to spend about $25 per wish list, but I guess with so many expensive toys out there, children would be curious to use them and play with them. Thus, the above wish list.

However, I fail to understand why would a parent be investing such an enormous amount on such toys? Children are too young to be given such expensive toys since they hardly know how to take care of them. If there would be few consumers, I believe the manufacturers would also limit their production or make these toys a little reasonable.

Comments?

Personally, I would be rather investing in a book or an encyclopedia with that large an amount, but for now, will be going and purchasing these toys since; I have promised the giving tree for supplying with their kids demands.

Question: What is your opinion about investing so much in toys?
Is it just me who is being a little dramatic over it?

Mantra for today: Simple tastes take us distance.

Don't ask me, because I bought my girls the Easy Bake Oven to share for this Christmas year. The prices are ridiculous, but this really is no way around it is seems.

I agree that the prices are ridiculous! I don't mind spending money on good quality toys that encourage imagination...like a wooden play kitchen or doll that will be treasured...but I refuse to buy a furby! It's on my daughter's list and I know it's not worth the money and she won't play with it long.
I do wish they would stop mass producing this stuff!

I agree that toys are crazy expensive...just wait until your kids get older, past the toy stage. Mine now want electronic type items like laptops and cameras, etc. that are REALLY expensive!

Toys are crazy expensive. I think if I had kids, they'd get ONE big one per year and smaller stuff like stocking stuffers. I can't see going out and getting all these things - the kids don't really appreciate them anyways...at least that's what I think.

I kind of go back and forth on this. Sadly, when it comes to Christmas I have a very loose budget which has a tendency to get me in trouble. I always seem to pick up a few extra things. That being said, this year, my kids only got one gift from us. The gift is expensive so I hope they like it, because each kid cost us 100 bucks! But yeah - I think toys are getting ridiculously expensive... but not just toys - everything. Makes it difficult to get gifts for people!

I completely agree with you, Ruchira. I have no idea why a child needs expensive toys.

It is amazing! And yet, I know we spent oodles of money for the girls in their younger years for the holidays--but clothes are expensive too--and they got a fair number of pants and shoes from us as well--so I guess I don't know what to tell you--I just wish we weren't so materialistic
