The Subway Station

“How did you do it? Could you be honest and not beat around the bush?” I asked Lily, my face earnest and my eyes fixed on hers. She was like my younger sister, but life had thrown me a curveball, so I was focusing on myself, which made me drift away from her despite her many missed calls. But today,  I saw that bag, my concern for her grew, since trouble was her last name. By inquiring about it, I wanted to create the trust that had long been gone. We had not been in touch for months. That changed now, when she accidentally bumped into me. The bag popped open. Its contents flew all over.

Lily took a couple of deep breaths, and her eyes darted into mine as she began, “I was late for work, so I was rushing through the subway station when I tripped over a brick in the middle of the path. The whole station echoed with the rattle of trains and the hurried footsteps of commuters. The cold concrete scraped my palms as I fell, and the glare from the fluorescent lights made the bright yellow safety stripes blur before my eyes. At first, I cursed my luck because I saw my train leave the station. The screech of the doors closing mocked me as I lay there, embarrassed in front of the crowd. Then I pulled myself up and stared at the brick. Its rough, dusty surface felt gritty in my hand, and it was strangely warm from all the passing feet. People at the station asked about my welfare, and I merely nodded yes because I was not interested in small talk. I picked up the damn brick, hoping to put it aside so nobody else gets hurt. Underneath it, I found a key with a tag attached. The metal was cool and heavy in my fingers, and the curved edges pressed against my palm. The paper had clues we used to play with when egg hunting. I was amused. I had to wait fifteen minutes for my next train, so I went with the flow. The paper read, ‘keep the brick on the side where there is a wall.’ That made me walk all the way around the station to find a wall. Both sides have trains coming and going. The smell of grease and metal followed me as I moved past the vibrating tracks. I found a wall that led to a door to a room. The wall was rough, with peeling paint that dusted my knuckles as I brushed against it. As I kept the brick there, the wall read, ‘don’t be shy, enter the room,’ which I did, but with hesitation, after a couple of knocks and no answer. The door creaked open, its old hinges groaning in protest. Inside, it was dim, with the faint musty smell of forgotten things. I found a trunk with a big lock. The trunk was old, battered, and the wood felt dry and splintery under my fingers. It confused me, but then the key in my hand made me think of unlocking it. To my surprise, it did. I looked outside the room, hoping to see someone, but when I peeped out, everyone was just running about their business. I opened the trunk and found a bag with a thank-you note on it. The bag was velvet, soft and a little dusty, and inside I found these gems. They were cool and smooth, catching every bit of stray light and throwing small rainbows across my hands. Just then, I heard the announcement of the upcoming train, which happened to be mine to work. I quickly grabbed the bag and darted toward my train when I bumped into you, who, as usual, always thought of me up to some mischief.”

“Your gesture to clear the path was rewarded handsomely,” I said with enthusiasm. I helped her quickly put those precious stones back in the bag. Then we boarded the train. That train journey helped us patch up the lost time and revive our friendship. It was a win-win situation for both of us!

The Circle of Life

Adam and Eve were the first man and woman according to the creation myths, and that was the seed of the broad population we have today.

Nature has designed a baby to be born from the union of two adults, thus making sure he is surrounded by family.

Alas! Not all are fortunate to be brought up in a cozy scenario. Circumstances are one such issue that comes forward.

Although the man is surrounded by his fellow men yet he feels alone and depressed.

He could attribute to the surroundings, the circumstances that he is breathing in...the survival of the fittest mantra when the competition reaches out to the neck, that makes an individual feel suffocated, that could either choke himself out, or he has the survival instincts and grabs an oxygen mask to be able to fight it out!

We all have been in that situation.
What breed are you?

“One love, one heart, one destiny.”
― Bob Marley

The present world is full of suffering and injustice, and every soul goes through hardships, thus making them shine like a diamond in the end.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”
― Plato

When each of us reflects on our lives spent so far, our eyes will get moist over some individuals who held our hands when our legs were shaky to walk even a single step; our tongues were stirring out of nervousness, our hands were trembling and sweaty due to anxiety and fear. There were some people and sometimes too many individuals who came in our lives who gave us the confidence to walk that extra step, to understand what was on our mind, to hold our hands steady, and provide us with the boost to come out of that situation, and today as we stand surrounded by the lush green of success or happiness we can feel the effect of compassion. The empathy of another human to understand us especially when we were in a plight, and he extended a lending hand. This hand not only comprised of physical support, but it also dressed up our spirits emotionally and subjectively.

Today, as I stand at the junction of my life where I have breathed in 40+ years of my life, I stand in gratitude for all my teachers, friends, family, neighbors, strangers who helped in the oddest of way, by either lending me a helping hand, or speaking a kind word or two, or just stretching those muscles around their lips by giving out a gentle smile. This gave me the jump start and helped ignite the engine within to keep moving in the direction of my goal.

Thus, making me believe in this great attribute as it created ripples in my life. I intend to pass the baton of compassion, empathy, tenderness, and kindness around so that I can complete the circle of life, with the satisfaction to touch "n" number of lives.

Compassion is essential, and it is all about giving what you have received so far. It is also a reminder to stay grounded since we all will wear the shoes of sorrow in our lifetime.

The source for morality is within us. We can either just follow our peers who are annoyed with the system of life or we could choose to make our own!

Mantra for today: Showing tolerance, and compassion towards the suffering helps to tap your inner self, which in return is a boon to your existence.

The Power Hungry!

Move over Robert Mugabe, Bashar-Al-Assad, Moammar Qaddafi, Than Shwe, Fidel Castro amongst many who were classified as worst dictators of the world.

Power is potent and can make anybody toxic thus, allowing an individual to tread a path that can lead to becoming unruly, boisterous, rambunctious and then this leads to being categorized as the worst dictator!

Nah! you are not to be blamed!

I have a formula for you to to help take over the world and yet be classified as the best rulers the divine could produce!

In order to take over the world, the first thing you ought to do is have double standards!

Curse, swear, aver in your private life, but always have a smiling face in front of the public. This sure takes time, but with practice it becomes easy, and honestly most of the universe is practicing it, so watch and learn.

You will win people by your gentle smile, aristocratic actions, docile mannerisms, and tamed language. Once you gain the confidence of that person, Voila! You can climb on his back by your sweet talk, and eventually climb the ladder to success by taking over the world.

“It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.”
― Noël Coward, Blithe Spirit

Morality is gradually becoming extinct. We are living in the world of “Me-Myself-Mine”. With the rise of social media, we are becoming like a robot. Constantly hooked to the Internet where feelings and authenticity go missing.

Man wants to live life king size but prefers to get wealth without work, gain knowledge without striving hard for it, become a leader without any sacrifices or make any conscience effort, and wants results the easy way. Integrity is going missing, and people want publicity for everything.

"if ethics is not the engine of success, in the train of growth, it sure is a guard, with a flag, which may be green, or at times red.”
― Priyavrat Thareja

So, individuals who are power hunger, use the fundamentals of  contrasting principles since man is too engrossed in himself. He can become your puppy, and you can eventually take him around on a leash without him noticing it.

Although, I pray that such a day does not come!

Mantra for today: The day we make compassion our companion, terror will become extinct.
